high-throughput screening for culture medium optimization
Innovative high-throughput screening for culture medium optimization
High-throughput screening (HTS) is a novel approach to drug discovery that has become more and more popular over the last years. The principle of HTS lies in the process of assaying a large number of potential effectors of biological activity against targets (a biological event). The ultimate goal is to accelerate drug discovery by screening large libraries often composed of hundreds of thousands of compounds (drug candidates) at a rate that may exceed thousands of compounds per week.
In the biopharmaceutical field a new feature is the use of HTS in culture medium optimization. Although this feature has become only recently available, Xendo Manufacturing already offers this service to their customers. A project that runs currently addresses the optimization of a culture medium for a CHO cell line. By using 204 mini bioreactors in parallel key parameters are closely monitored; parameters involved are cell count, viability, productivity and metabolites. By applying HTS the chance of selecting the optimal culture medium is maximized and project time is minimized.
